Charred photo tells a story

Updated: Dec 14, 2019

Having an abundance of photos was a challenge back in the day. This school has a story about it's one and only picture! Notice the black finger smudge in the corner?

Between the 1900's and 1950's many country schools were a commonplace, within a 15 mile radius

around the hub of the growing towns. Gatherings and activities were a vital part of the community and the school was the "place" to be! Many students only completed 8th grade as they were then bused to the nearest towns for the remainder of their education. Or, in the case of Highland Center, you went to 10th grade and then off to work!

How the charred picture came to be.

A neighbor who lived and farmed several miles from the school had a fire in his house and many of his belonging and treasures blew out the vent flue of his chimney. The friends who lived nearby acted quickly to help him, gathering all the photos and treasures that were strewn across his yard. Thanks to their quick thinking we have a cherished memory today!

Highland Center School was located about 10 miles south of Haxtun Colorado. The name plate on the school read 1919. It is believed that it closed in the early 1960's and then was used for community events. It burned down in 1979.
