Gala Day was the start of a long standing tradition in the small town of Haxtun, Colorado.
Gala day is a term that is not commonly used in our culture today, but back in 1910 this once a year grandiose celebration was something everyone in the community looked forward to. A year long planning went in to making this event a special time for the family. Many area farmers put in long hours preparing for the harvest to come, making this a tribute to all their hard work and dedication. An all day event similar to a county fair, would begin with a parade in the morning, carnival rides, and street games. And from what it appears in this picture with the flags waving; my guess.... patriotism was a woven thread in all who attended. Many had a sincere bond to the country.
This celebration continues today in the strong and vital town of Haxtun Co. They now call it - The Haxtun Corn Festival, a truly gala event! It takes place the last Saturday of every September. The theme for the 2018 event was, "So God Made a Farmer."
