New Haven, Colorado, a historic community, thirteen miles south of Fleming Colorado, was discovered and settled in 1909, by a inspiring group of men making the journey from the East, looking for an opportunity to come West to regain their health.......thus the name, New Haven! The long standing trees planted in those early years, are still a reminder of the lasting pride and the deep roots of this close-knit community.
As the town grew, community members saw a need to build a permanent church structure as they were meeting in the Bellevue school. (Taken from The Logan County Ledger by Dale Wells)
Dedication with full worship for the New Haven Methodist Church was in June 18, 1916. The final cost for the church building was $3,000.00! Services and Sunday School continued for about 70 years!
Soon construction began (south of the church) for a much needed school (1917) and later a gym (1929). In the beginning, the school served all grades but in later years the high school merged with Fleming High, Fleming Co. It is believed that the school closed in the mid 1960's.
Although the buildings are no longer there, the memories remain in the hearts of the community and shared with new a generation of New Haven Colorado residents. Today, CHS (Grainland Cooperative), has its operations where the church, post office (built in 1911) and church once stood.
